The therapist uses their hands (thumbs, elbows, forearms) and sometimes, even their feet to reduce tension in the muscles. The massage does not use oils or lotions. The therapist will move the person's body into yoga-like positions (assisted yoga) in addition to pulling and rocking the body in various other ways.

With Thai massage, you can wear your own loose-fitting clothes, or the practitioner may have you change into scrub-like garments — a loose cotton top and drawstring pants. You keep your clothes on throughout the massage. Typically, you'll lie on a mat or massage mattress on the floor, not on a massage table.

It's up to you. Women usually remove their bras to allow the massage therapist to work on the back and shoulder area without getting massage oil or lotion on the bra. If your problem area is your low back, hips, buttocks, or groin, tight-fitting or large underwear can sometimes get in the way of massage work.
